Safety tips when boating

The US coastguard site says that each year we lose hundreds of lives to preventable recreational boating accidents. While boating can be fun, keeping a few things in mind while you’re in water will ensure that your pleasure trip stays that way—a pleasure trip. Here are a few handy hints that’ll help.
  1. Test-drive: Always test drive your boat before you embark on the cruise. Make sure your check if the horn functions properly…even if you rarely use it.
  2. Weather forecast: Check the weather forecast and be especially careful if you are going out in the water during bad weather or at the night.
  3. Have a plan B: Always have a float plan ready. Intimate the crew and other members on the boat as to what steps are to be taken in the event of an emergency.
  4. Accessible safety equipment: Store the life jackets at an easily accessible place and make sure everyone aboard knows where they’re kept.
  5. Avoid alcohol when on board: Studies suggest that chances of boat accidents double when you are inebriated.
  6. Drive at a ‘safe speed’ at all times: Safe speed is the speed at which you are in total control of your boat and can maneuver it in any manner you want.
  7. Stay away, stay safe: Steer clear of larger boats and swimmers.
  8. Be aware of and follow boating and yachting rules: Your State may have mandatory boating rules to be followed when in water. Be aware of those and follow them. These may include rules regarding right of way, speed limit, mandatory safety equipment etc.
  9. Invest in basic personal safety equipment: These include water tight flashlights, re-entry ladder, harness, whistles, air horn, life-smoke device, life jackets and so on.
  10. Have a VHF marine radio on board: It can save your life by allowing you to alert other boats or the coastal authorities when you are in need of help.
  11. Enroll n a boat safety course: You could also enroll in a boat safety course and learn swimming if you already haven’t done so.

Boating or yachting is just like driving. Exercise caution, extend basic courtesy and use your common sense. And…enjoy those pristine waters and the cool breeze.
